In a future where the polar ice caps have melted and submerged the Earth, a drifter with gills, known as the Mariner, becomes the only hope for a group of survivors. He encounters a woman and her young daughter who possess a map to the mythical dry land of 'Atoll'. Pursued by the ruthless pirate leader Deacon and his Smokers, the Mariner must protect them and the secret of dry land.

Waterworld was a box office disappointment and received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. While some praised its ambitious scale and action sequences, many criticized its convoluted plot, excessive budget, and perceived lack of originality, often comparing it unfavorably to Mad Max.
