In the mid-22nd century, humans are exploiting the moon Pandora for a valuable mineral. A paraplegic former Marine, Jake Sully, is recruited to operate an "avatar" body, a genetically engineered Na'vi-human hybrid, to infiltrate the indigenous population. As he develops a relationship with Neytiri, a Na'vi woman, Jake finds himself torn between his mission and his growing empathy for the planet's inhabitants.
