In an alternate reality, an alien spaceship appears over Johannesburg, South Africa. Instead of invasion, the stranded aliens are relocated to an internment camp called District 9. As tensions rise between the human population and the alien refugees, a bureaucratic official working for the corporation in charge of the aliens discovers a mysterious substance that links him to the fate of the aliens.
