Plot Summary

Four insomniacs are lured to a remote, gothic mansion under the guise of a sleep study. As the night progresses, they discover the house is a living entity that preys on their deepest fears, manifesting terrifying visions and pushing them to their breaking points. The group must find a way to survive the supernatural onslaught and escape the malevolent presence before it consumes them entirely.

Critical Reception

The 1999 adaptation of 'The Haunting' was largely panned by critics and audiences alike. While some acknowledged the ambitious visual effects and production design, the film was widely criticized for its convoluted plot, underdeveloped characters, and reliance on jump scares over genuine psychological horror. It failed to capture the essence of Shirley Jackson's novel or the atmosphere of the acclaimed 1963 version.

What Reviewers Say

  • Visually stunning but narratively hollow, relying heavily on CGI and cheap scares.
  • A disappointing remake that sacrifices atmosphere and character for spectacle.
  • Fails to deliver on its horror premise, offering a convoluted and uninspired story.

Google audience: Audience reviews indicate a mixed to negative reception, with many finding the film to be a missed opportunity. While some appreciated the visual effects and the attempt at a grand scale, a significant portion of viewers felt the plot was weak, the scares unoriginal, and the characters unengaging. It's often seen as a forgettable entry in the horror genre.

Fun Fact

The massive castel, known as Hill House in the film, was actually a combination of a full-scale set built in California and digitally enhanced CGI, as no single real-world location could accurately represent the intended gothic grandeur and scale.

Pretty good cast, decent enough effects for its time but a lame movie. Saw this one before years ago, didn't care for it then, opinion remains the same today. Makes complete sense why Spielberg had his name removed. **2.0/5**
