Plot Summary

In a future where children are raised from birth to be perfect soldiers, a dedicated warrior named Todd is unexpectedly deactivated and deemed obsolete. He is then abandoned on a desolate planet and must use his honed combat skills to survive when he encounters a group of civilian settlers. Todd finds himself protecting them from a squad of newer, genetically enhanced soldiers sent to eliminate him and any potential witnesses.

Critical Reception

Soldier received a mixed to negative reception from critics, with many finding its premise interesting but ultimately failing to deliver a compelling narrative. While the action sequences and Kurt Russell's performance were occasionally praised, the film was often criticized for its derivative plot, underdeveloped characters, and overly familiar science fiction tropes.

What Reviewers Say

  • Kurt Russell delivers a stoic and compelling performance as the titular soldier.

  • The film's world-building and action sequences are its strongest assets.

  • Ultimately let down by a predictable plot and uninspired storytelling.

Google audience: Audience reviews indicate a split reaction. Many appreciated the high-octane action and the concept of a genetically engineered super-soldier, with Kurt Russell's performance being a highlight for some. However, a significant portion of viewers found the plot derivative of other sci-fi action films and felt the movie lacked originality and emotional depth.
