In the mid-22nd century, humans have discovered the lush, habitable moon Pandora, inhabited by the Na'vi, a sentient humanoid species. When a paraplegic Marine, Jake Sully, is given the chance to walk again through an "avatar"—a genetically engineered Na'vi body—he is drawn into a conflict between his own kind, who seek to exploit Pandora for its valuable resources, and the indigenous Na'vi, who fight to protect their home. Jake finds himself torn between his duty and his growing connection to the Na'vi way of life and their spiritual leader's daughter, Neytiri.
