Plot Summary

James Bond goes rogue after his friend Felix Leiter is brutally attacked and his wife killed by drug lord Franz Sanchez. Dispensing with his "licence to kill," Bond embarks on a personal vendetta to hunt down Sanchez in the Central American city of Isthmus. Along the way, he teams up with DEA agent Pam Bouvier and Sanchez's lover Lupe Lamora to infiltrate the drug lord's operations.

Critical Reception

Licence to Kill was met with mixed to positive reviews. While some critics praised Timothy Dalton's darker, more visceral portrayal of Bond and the film's grittier tone, others found it too violent and a departure from the traditional Bond formula. Box office performance was considered somewhat disappointing compared to previous installments.

What Reviewers Say

  • Timothy Dalton delivers a compelling and intense performance as a more brutal James Bond.
  • The film's darker, more violent tone and departure from convention divided critics.
  • Praised for its action sequences and more grounded approach, but criticized by some for straying too far from the classic Bond charm.

Google audience: Audiences generally appreciated Timothy Dalton's more serious and violent take on James Bond, finding the action sequences thrilling. Some viewers, however, missed the lighter, more sophisticated elements typically associated with the franchise.

Fun Fact

Timothy Dalton is one of only two actors (the other being George Lazenby) to play James Bond in just one official Eon Productions film, although he was contracted for three and slated for a fourth before legal disputes halted production on the next Bond film.
