In 18th-century Thebes, Princess Hesione of Sparta, disguised as a man named Phocion, infiltrates the palace of Duke Atticus. Her goal is to win back her own lands, which Atticus wrongfully seized. However, her plan becomes complicated when she falls deeply in love with the Duke, who in turn is infatuated with her male disguise, and also becomes the object of affection for the Duchess, Hermione, and the court physician, Hermocrates.
