Plot Summary

Shrovetide is approaching and the villagers of Strakonice are preparing for their traditional masquerade. Voceslav, a young man, is in love with the miller's daughter, Dorotka, but her father is against their union. When a mysterious stranger arrives with a magical bagpipe that can play any tune, Voceslav sees an opportunity to win Dorotka's hand.
