In 1920s Santa Barbara, two ambitious but down-on-their-luck men, Nicky Wilson and Freddie Sutton, decide to defraud a wealthy young heiress, Marianne. They hatch a plan to marry her, gain control of her fortune, and then subtly arrange for her demise. However, their schemes become complicated by Marianne's own manipulative nature and the unexpected involvement of her shrewd and protective aunt.
