In the year 2045, the real world is a bleak place. People escape by spending time in the OASIS, a vast virtual reality universe. When the OASIS's creator dies, he leaves behind a posthumous contest, challenging users to find an Easter egg hidden within the virtual world. The first to find the egg will inherit his fortune and control of the OASIS. A young orphan named Wade Watts becomes one of the main contenders, but faces ruthless competition and corporate greed.
