Plot Summary

A Democratic big-city political consultant, Gary Zimmer, sees an opportunity to score points against his Republican rivals by helping a retired Marine colonel, Jack Hastings, run for mayor of a small Wisconsin town. However, the race quickly becomes a lot more complicated than Gary anticipated, both politically and personally. As Gary tries to mold Jack into a winning candidate, he underestimates the intelligence and spirit of the small-town residents and the political savvy of his Republican counterpart, Faith Brewster. The seemingly straightforward election becomes a fierce battleground, revealing the unpredictable nature of politics.

Critical Reception

Irresistible received a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike. While praised for its sharp wit and the performances of its lead actors, particularly Steve Carell, many found the film's satirical edge to be somewhat blunted and its narrative predictable. Some critics felt the film didn't quite live up to the political commentary expectations set by director Jon Stewart's previous work, while others appreciated its lighthearted approach to political maneuvering.

What Reviewers Say

  • The film attempts a timely political satire but lands with a thud, lacking the sharp bite of Jon Stewart's previous work.

  • Steve Carell delivers a solid performance, but the predictable plot and uneven humor prevent the film from truly connecting.

  • While some moments of wit shine through, the overall message feels muddled and the political commentary is surprisingly superficial.

Google audience: Audience reviews indicate a general disappointment with 'Irresistible,' with many feeling that the film missed an opportunity for sharper political satire. While Steve Carell's performance received some praise, the plot was often described as predictable and the humor not always landing effectively, leading to a lukewarm reception overall.
