Zeke is forced to play a terrifying game of cat and mouse with the methodical murderer, as the body count rises. Critical Reception

Spiral received generally negative reviews from critics, with many criticizing its predictable plot, overuse of gore, and attempts to revive the Saw franchise. Audience reception was also mixed, with some appreciating the new direction and cast, while others found it to be a weak entry in the series.

What Reviewers Say

  • While attempting a fresh take on the Saw franchise with a more serious tone and a star-studded cast, Spiral ultimately falters due to a predictable script and a reliance on gore over genuine suspense.
  • The film is praised for its solid performances, particularly from Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, but these are not enough to elevate a derivative and uninspired storyline.
  • Critics found the movie to be a blood-soaked retread of previous Saw installments, lacking the inventive traps and narrative twists that once defined the series.

Google audience: Google users were divided on Spiral, with many appreciating Chris Rock's attempt to bring a new energy to the Saw franchise. However, a significant portion of viewers felt the film was too violent, lacked originality, and failed to capture the essence of the earlier Saw movies.

Fun Fact

Chris Rock pitched the idea for Spiral to Lionsgate, wanting to create a Saw film that felt more like a gritty crime thriller, and was given significant creative control over the project.
