Plot Summary

A young couple, driven by the need for money, agrees to take on a mysterious job at an isolated, decaying mansion. They soon discover that the house holds dark secrets and a sinister presence that begins to prey on their deepest fears and fractured relationship. As paranoia and terror escalate, they must fight for their survival against the encroaching darkness and their own inner demons.

Critical Reception

Kalm Waes received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While some praised its atmospheric tension and the performances of its lead actors, particularly Jena Malone, many found the plot predictable and the horror elements derivative of superior genre films. The film struggled to establish a unique identity amidst a crowded thriller landscape.

What Reviewers Say

  • Praised for its unsettling atmosphere and strong lead performances.

  • Criticized for a derivative plot and unoriginal horror tropes.

  • The film's pacing was noted as inconsistent, with a slow burn that didn't always pay off.

Google audience: Google users were divided, with many appreciating the suspenseful build-up and the emotional depth of the central characters' struggle. However, a significant portion felt the film relied too heavily on jump scares and failed to deliver a truly surprising conclusion, leaving some audiences feeling underwhelmed by the resolution.

Fun Fact

The isolated mansion used for filming was a real, largely abandoned estate with a history of local legends, which director D. J. Caruso felt added an authentic layer of creepiness to the production.
