A married couple, Zhenya and Boris, are going through a bitter divorce, both having found new partners. They argue incessantly over the sale of their shared apartment and custody of their 12-year-old son, Alyosha, whom they both seem to resent. One morning, Alyosha doesn't return home from school, and it becomes apparent he has run away. A frantic search ensues, involving the police and a volunteer rescue group, exposing the profound emotional void and moral decay within the parents and the society around them.
