In a near future where humanoid computers called Persocoms are commonplace, Hideki Motosuwa, a poor farm boy, moves to the city to study. He longs for a Persocom but can't afford one. One night, he finds a beautiful, abandoned Persocom and takes her home. He discovers she can only say "Chii" and has no initial knowledge, naming her Chi. The series follows their developing relationship and Chi's journey of self-discovery as she learns about the world and her own mysterious origins.
