Plot Summary

In 1797, the British Royal Navy forcibly conscripts Billy Budd, a handsome and innocent young man, into service aboard the HMS Avenger. His inherent goodness and natural leadership quickly earn him the respect of the crew but also the bitter hatred of the sadistic Master-at-Arms, John Claggart. When Claggart falsely accuses Billy of inciting mutiny, Billy strikes his accuser in a fit of rage, accidentally killing him. Captain Vere, torn between military law and his own sense of justice, must decide Billy's fate.
