In Soviet Ukraine, young lovers Natalka and Yuri dream of a life beyond the oppressive regime. As Stalin's collectivization policies tighten their grip, their idyllic village is plunged into famine, known as the Holodomor. Yuri is forced to flee to the capital to seek help, witnessing the horrific extent of the man-made starvation, while Natalka fights for survival back home, facing starvation and the brutal secret police.
